Pierre Boulez at 90
David Mellor, Sunday 29 March 2015, 7pm.
David Mellor raises a glass to the French composer and conductor, Pierre Boulez, who this week celebrated his 90th birthday.
Here's why Pierre Boulez is basically a 20th (and 21st) century legend >
Since the late 1950s, Boulez has directed most of the world's leading orchestras. He has been particularly famed for his performances of 20th-century classics and contemporary music, and an acclaimed interpreter of the music of Beethoven, Berlioz, Schumann and Wagner. And famously, Boulez never used a baton, conducting with his hands alone.
Tonight David features Boulez conducting the music of Mahler, Debussy and Ravel, from across the course of his career at the helm of the Cleveland, Chicago Symphony and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras.
