Crucial public service announcement: this is the greatest tambourine solo that has ever existed.
An clip of Mexican percussionist Gabriela Jiménez playing the tambourine has gone viral, amassing over 200,000 views and 3,000 shares on Facebook.
Using the skin, frame and metal jingles (called ‘zills’), Jiménez creates an extraordinarily rhythmic performance.
From her fingertips to her wrist, she uses every part of her hand to create sounds on the instrument – and it’s completely mesmerising to watch.
Since 1981, Jiménez has played timpani with the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica de Mineria and the Mexican Soloist Chamber Orchestra. She also teaches percussion at the National School of Music and the Escuela de Perfeccionamiento Vida y Movimiento.
The video was filmed in July 2017 at Rachmaninov Concert Hall in Moscow, Russia.
