What is it that forms a great Mozartian singer – aside from a beautiful voice, emotional poise and musical stylishness, that is? Whatever it is, the young Belgian soprano Sophie Karthäuser has got it, plus the necessary Mozartian effortlessness that transforms a merely correct performance into something true and real. She shines in this selection of popular concert and opera arias, including the fiery ‘Tiger!’ from Zaïde, ‘Ach ich Fühls’ from The Magic Flute and the charming ‘Ch’io mi scordi di te’. There are some very minor technical vocal things one could quibble about, but they don’t diminish her rare talent.
