Beethoven: Piano Concerto No.3/Mozart: Piano Concerto No.24 - Yevgeny Sudbin/Minnesota Orchestra/Osmo Vänskä
Electrifying performances from a stellar pianist. Classic FM Drive Featured Album, 3 February 2014.
Still in his early 30s, Yevgeny Sudbin has been hailed as potentially one of the greatest pianists of the 21st century
Here he joins forces again with the Minnesota Orchestra under Osmo Vänskä, following on from a huge success with their cycle of Beethoven's Symphonies and Piano Concertos Nos. 4 and 5. This time they have added Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 24, often regarded as the inspiration for Beethoven's work. The mood is dramatic, even Romantic memorably described as an 'explosion of passion, of dark tragic emotions'.
Mozart's concerto calls for the performer to come up with cadenzas of their own for the first and last movements. Here, Sudbin pushes the boundaries of the acceptable in an electric performance.
An unmissable, and often startling, recording.
