A delightful pairing that truly brings Mozart to life.
Composer: Mozart
Repertoire: Divertimento No.17 and Oboe Quartet
Artist: Scottish Chamber Orchestra Ensemble/Alexander Janiczek
Rating: 4/5
Genre: Chamber
Label: Linn CKD376
The Music: Mozart’s Divertimento is not only one of the longest works of its kind but also one of the most enchanting. The Oboe Quartet is an exquisite delight that exploits the oboe’s lyrical perkiness to perfection.
The Performances: The Divertimento was a favourite of Herbert von Karajan’s, although listening to the buoyant intimacy of the Scottish COE compared to the plush luxuriance of the Berlin Philharmonic’s full string section, one might as well be experiencing a different piece! Here Mozart’s sparkling textures receive an affectionate spring clean that works wonders in clarifying his genius for musical interplay. Oboist Robin Williams leads a delightful performance of the Quartet that radiates charm during the buoyant outer movements.
The Verdict: A fine coupling that captures Mozart’s inestimable skill and irrepressible charm shortly before he made the break from his home town of Salzburg for the bright lights of Vienna.
