In the days before recordings, chamber arrangements were a standard way of getting orchestral works played more often. What’s lost in power gains in detail; and the Manchester Camerata’s nerveless control of the most exposed scoring makes this a memorable listening experience. So does the lovely singing of Kate Royal (a name to watch), and Boyd’s precise and purposeful conducting.
