The dotted rhythms of the delightfully catchy Les Sauvages (familiar from Les Indes Galantes) are the epitome of French Baroque, while the pecking motif in La Poule has a prickly sting under Kiener’s expressive fingers. The instrument’s golden tinkling makes a delicate lattice in the air and the bass has depth. Perhaps Kiener could have used the lute stop more, but it’s a small complaint.
