Without any coupling and with some 70 plus other versions to choose from, any new recording of Brahms’s majestic second concerto is really up against it. Mind you this live account, given as recently as May 2003 in the Royal Festival Hall, has a great deal going for it: stunning pianism from François-Frédéric Guy, the LPO on peak form, and a superbly balanced Mike Hatch recording. Well worth hearing for its moving nobility and sincerity.
