Brahms’s piano trios spanned the full length of his career and contain music that ranges from the most intimate tenderness to almost symphonic breadth and power. The Gould Trio gives a joyous account of these first two ebullient works, accentuating their warm-heartedness and generosity. The playing is honest, direct and lyrical and Benjamin Frith’s pianism, which has such lightness of touch in the mercurial scherzos, is a special delight.
