John's album of the week is from pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim, a man who is extremely passionate about the music of Beethoven. On this new album, he showcases the composer’s music both on the podium and at the keyboard. John Suchet's Album of the Week, 23 July 2013.
There are all sorts of favourites here, with movements from lots of the symphonies performed by the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra. Says Barenboim, “I think the Beethoven symphonies with the Divan orchestra is different in the sense that there is a terrific amount of energy because of the youth of the people – but there is just as much rigour. The combination of rigour with youthful energy is very strong.”
Barenboim also performs all sorts of Beethoven piano concertos and sonatas on this album – join John Suchet every morning at around 10.15 to hear something from it for yourself.
