Baz Luhrmann's updating of the love classic retains the bard's original dialogue alongside a modern soundtrack and a disarmingly simple score by British composer Craig Armstrong.
Released: 1996
Directed by: Baz Luhrmann
Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Clare Danes, John Leguizamo, Pete Postlethwaite
The Film: Shakespeare's famous play is updated to the hip modern suburb of Verona where the gun-toting members of two warring families wage a vicious battle on the streets as the young star-crossed lovers, Romeo (Leonardo di Caprio) and Juliet (Clare Danes) pursue their tragic destiny.
Composer: This project marked the start of a perfect partnership with director Baz Luhrmann for Craig Armstrong. Collaborating with Armstrong on the score were two previous Massive Attack cohorts, Nelle Hooper and Marius de Vries, who undertook the ambitious task of creating the unconventional soundtrack to the very unconventional modern interpretation of the Shakespeare classic. Armstrong went on to join Baz Luhrmann on the musical spectacular Moulin Rouge.
