One of Classic FM’s proud partner orchestras, the award-winning Royal Liverpool Philharmonic is the UK’s oldest continuing professional symphony orchestra, with origins dating back to 1840.
The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic has been at the heart of Liverpool's cultural life for generations and gives over 60 concerts a year in its home, Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, as well as concerts in venues across the UK and on tour across Asia, Europe, and the US as a proud ambassador for Liverpool and Merseyside.
In November 2001, the Liverpool Phil was the first UK orchestra to enter into a ground-breaking partnership with Classic FM, with a shared desire to build new audiences for classical music.
Liverpool Philharmonic premieres and commissions more music than any other UK orchestra, with over 150 works premiered and commissioned in the last 10 years, and in recent seasons, the Orchestra has given world premiere performances of major works by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Sir John Tavener, Sir Karl Jenkins, Michael Nyman, James Horner, and Sir James MacMillan. Over 900,000 people in 92 countries listen to RLPO recordings every month on Spotify.
Recordings are an important part of the Orchestra’s work and recent releases on the Onyx Classics label include Verismo, an album of orchestral intermezzi from Italian operas, an album of works by Puerto-Rican composer Roberto Sierra, and a disc of French works by Roussel, Debussy and Dukas – all conducted by Domingo Hindoyan. With their Principal Guest Conductor, Andrew Manze, the orchestra has recorded Vaughan Williams’ complete symphonies and the complete Beethoven Piano Concerto cycle with Boris Giltburg, conducted by Laureate Vasily Petrenko, who also conducted the Orchestra for the complete symphonies of Shostakovich, Rachmaninov, and Tchaikovsky.
Domingo Hindoyan joined the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra as Chief Conductor in September 2021. Hindoyan joins a distinguished line of musicians who have led the Orchestra during its illustrious history including Max Bruch, Sir Malcolm Sargent, Sir John Pritchard, Sir Charles Groves, Libor Pešek KBE, and Vasily Petrenko.
Hindoyan has recently extended his contract as Chief Conductor with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra through August 2028.
