Classic FM welcomes a new orchestra into the Classic FM family today. The Orchestra of Opera North is the sixth Classic FM Orchestra, and will be known as Classic FM’s Orchestra in Yorkshire.
The Orchestra of Opera North is based in Leeds but tours regularly across Yorkshire. It is the only ensemble in England to have a year-round dual role in the opera house and concert hall, making frequent appearances with international guest conductors and soloists, as well as playing in the pit for each Opera North season.
The Orchestra also gives regular tours overseas and conducts extensive education work. With its Play ON scheme, it goes into schools in Leeds and Kirklees, working with teachers and pupils across all ages groups and giving children the chance to play musical instruments for the first time.
This latest addition joins five other Classic FM Orchestras: the London Symphony Orchestra, Northern Sinfonia, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Philharmonia Orchestra.
The next opportunity to hear the Orchestra of Opera North live is on Thursday 23 September at Huddersfield Town Hall, in a concert that will include Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.4 and Beethoven’s Egmont Overture. Read more about this concert and buy tickets.
