All this week, Jane Jones presents a series of exclusive, specially-recorded concerts from the Orchestra of the Academy of St. Cecilia in Rome, conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano.
The Academy of St. Cecilia in Rome was established 105 years ago and its impressive heritage includes collaborations with many distinguished conductors and composers including Gustav Mahler, Herbert von Karajan, Giuseppe Sinopoli and Leonard Bernstein.
Sir Antonio Pappano, known primarily in the UK for his role as Music Director of the Royal Opera House, is also now in his seventh year as the Music Director of this superb Roman orchestra.
Across the course of the next five nights, Sir Antonio will be on the podium to conduct outstanding performances of many fine orchestral works, from Rachmaninov’s Symphony No.2 to Dvorak’s Symphony No.9 (‘From the New World’) – all played in full.
We begin our week in Rome with an all-Italian programme, kicking off with Rossini's iconic overture to William Tell. We’ll also enjoy Respighi’s Roman Trilogy, composed for this very orchestra. It’s an atmospheric illustration of the Eternal City, depicting the fountains, sunshine, umbrella pines and festivals.
Plus, as a bonus, a delightful performance of Ponchielli’s famous Dance of the Hours.
