Here’s a huge and beautifully detailed graphic that shows a century-spanning course from Beethoven to Carl Czerny to Sergei Rachmaninov.
We love this kind of thing. This superb illustration from 1927 shows exactly how musical influence gets passed down over the generations.
Starting with Beethoven in the top left, you can trace a line of piano teachers all the way up to Rachmaninov, with Carl Czerny sitting pretty in the middle with a huge influence on modern piano.
