Classic FM will be playing ‘For The Fallen: In Memoriam Alfryn Jenkins’ by Karl Jenkins, today at 5pm. Nick Bailey will air the brand new work, which will feature on the EMI Classics’ 10th anniversary re-issue of ‘The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace’.
‘For the Fallen: In Memoriam Alfryn Jenkins’ is a setting of Laurence Binyon’s poem, which is recited across the world every Remembrance Day. It’s dedicated to the memory of the composer’s viola-playing uncle, Pilot Officer Alfryn Jenkins. Alfryn Jenkins was captain of a Lancaster Bomber which was lost in action in a raid over Berlin in 1944, the year Karl Jenkins was born. The piece’s soprano solo is performed by Hayley Westenra and the spoken verse is read by legendary British actor Bernard Cribbins.
The tenth anniversary special edition of Karl Jenkin’ ‘The Armed Man: A Mass For Peace’ is released on October 18. ‘The Armed Man…’, was jointly commissioned by Classic FM and The Royal Armouries. The Kosovan confict-inspired piece is the most popular work by a living composer in Classic FM’s Hall Of Fame.
